Years ago I watched the film The Duelists , excellent film .It made me curious as to the novel The Duel .The novel is superb , I really enjoyed it , well written and with a surprising ending after all the irrational violence expressed in the multiple duels .
I love Conrad and I am reading other novels written by him that are also excellent
Short novella, not among Conrad's best but interesting enough to finish.
One of my all time favorite movies is "The Duelist" and I enjoyed The Duel even more.
Shows insight into peoples minds
The writing itself is brilliant. This particular edition seems hastily assembled at best, to the point that the illustrations seem to belong to some other book. I don't think there were many car dashboards or smartphones in the Napoleonic Wars.
Joseph Conrad is one of the great writers. He is the master of expressing the the frustration felt by a man who finds himself in a tough jam.
The 1977 Ridley Scott film, 'The Duellists' is a fine companion to the novella (well... in the movie they added a mushy part, lol).
I think this edition is one that was 'printed on demand'. It is very nicely put together. A pleasure.
Enjoyed it, but preferred the movie with Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel.
